SOMOs 2021: Key Findings Report

Jan 13, 2022

Employers and educational institutions continued to advance social mobility in 2020-21, in spite of ongoing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most social mobility work over this period aimed to reach, recruit and retain people from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds. There were also examples of activities to support career progression, to collect and use socio-economic background data, and to advocate for greater awareness of social mobility.

In Advancing Social Mobility in the UK, we draw on thematic analysis of all entries to the 2021 awards to examine key activities, facilitators and barriers to social mobility work in the private and public sectors. The report includes key findings and recommendations to inform future social mobility work in the UK.
