Why social mobility matters more than ever – and why 2026 is the year to step forward

Jun 9, 2026

Across the UK, organisations are rethinking what opportunity really looks like. They’re reassessing who gets access, who gets heard, and who gets the chance to thrive. And in a year shaped by economic uncertainty and shifting labour markets, one thing has become clear: social mobility isn’t a “nice to have” – it’s a business imperative. That’s why the UK Social Mobility Awards (The SOMOs) return in 2026 with renewed purpose. Now in their landmark year, the Awards continue to recognise the employers, leaders, and changemakers who are not only talking about social mobility but actively building it into the fabric of their organisations.

A national platform for meaningful change

Since their launch, The SOMOs have grown into the UK’s leading celebration of social mobility excellence. They shine a spotlight on the organisations widening access, breaking down barriers, and opening doors for talent that too often goes unseen.

This year’s Awards feature 14 categories – eleven organisational and three individual – capturing the full spectrum of work happening across sectors. From outreach and recruitment to progression, advocacy, and leadership, the SOMOs recognise the initiatives that are shifting the dial.

And the momentum is real. Last year’s UK Social Mobility Awards saw record engagement from FTSE companies, SMEs, and pioneering individuals. The message is clear: social mobility is becoming a defining measure of organisational responsibility and long-term success

Why organisations should enter in 2026

For employers, entering The SOMOs is more than a badge of honour. It’s a chance to:

  • Demonstrate leadership in a space that increasingly shapes public trust and employer reputation
  • Showcase measurable impact to stakeholders, employees, and future talent
  • Benchmark progress against sector leaders and peers
  • Amplify stories of the people and communities your work supports
  • Join a national movement committed to building a fairer, more inclusive society

In a landscape where talent pipelines are shifting and expectations around inclusion are rising, organisations that invest in social mobility are better equipped to innovate, attract, and retain the people who will shape the future.

The UK Social Mobility Awards is a fundraising initiative for the registered charity, Making The Leap.
